Travel Plan

In Brief
First, fly to Greece (step 1), then fly to Crete (step 2) or take the ferry (step 2') and afterwards catch a public bus or a taxi to Ierapetra (step 3). If you arrive by public bus to Ierapetra catch a taxi fro the station to your hotel (step 4).

In Detail

Step 1: Reaching Greece
The largest airport in Greece is "Eleftherios Venizelos" (code ATH) in Athens. From there there are very often flights to/from Crete (read later for recommended airlines).
Alternatively, "Macedonia" airport in Thessaloniki can be used. The airport code is SKG. It is cheaper (especially for flights from Europe) but also a bit more time consuming. From there, there are flights to Crete as well.

Step 2: Reaching Crete (see Step 2' for reaching Crete by ferry!)
Heraklion is largest city in Crete and it is ~100 km from the final destination of Ierapetra. Fly to "Nikos Kazantzakis" airport in Heraklion (code HER) from either Athens or Thessaloniki using one of the domestic carriers:

They both provide often flights to Heraklion from either Athens or Thessaloniki. The cost should be expected to be around 100 euros (both ways) when booked early.

Step 2': Reaching Crete by ferry
Crete can be reached by sea via two connections. Both depart from Piraeus port (Athens)for which there is direct often connection from the airport of Athens. The destination in Crete can be either Heraklion or Agios Nicolaos (St. Nicolaos). The trip is overnight and lasts as long as roughly 9 hours. During June one can enjoy the summer breeze after a nice dinner onboard and then rest in a modern cabin.

2'a. Piraeus-Heraklion: the advantage is that the ferries are very large state-of -the-art ships. The disadvantage is the distance from Ierapetra of roughly 100 km. There are two companies that operate this connection MINOAN and ANEK lines. TIP: Outside the ship of MINOAN lines there is a bus that is waiting for passengers to Ierapetra directly. You have to be fast to catch. Otherwise you must go to the bus station that is a few hundred meters apart. Here you can get an example booking for a participant reaching Crete accompanied by one adult.

2'b. Piraeus-Ag. Nikolaos: the advantage is that the distance to Ierapetra is only 35 km but the ships are a bit smaller. Get info at reservations at LANE lines as well as here .

Step 3: Reaching Ierapetra
From Heraklion: Ierapetra is roughly 100 km from Heraklion. Catch a public bus or a taxi from the airport terminal or from the port (in case you arrive by ferry) to Ierapetra (via Agios Nicolaos). In former case the bus stop is very close to the terminal building. Ask for the intercity bus stop to Ierapetra. In the latter case it is within the port. There are buses to Ierapetra daily at 07:00, 08:00, 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 15:30, 17:30, 19:00.

  • Bus: It costs about 9.5 euros and it takes almost 2.5 hours. If you travel with MINOAN ferry lines you have a 50% discount. The bus will drop you at the bus station. Then catch a taxi (see step 4) to your hotel.
  • Taxi: It costs roughly 85-90 euros (per taxi not per person) and it takes roughly 1.5 hours (the price is subject to change) and will take you directly to your hotel.
Important Note: Since most of the participants arrive on the 3rd of June we are planing to have a charter bus for that day's late arrivals. Hence, those arriving on the 3rd of June that cannot catch the public bus (see schedule above), please choose in the next link the slot within which your arrival in Heraklio is. That will allow us to assist most of the participants.

We 'll let you know on the decided time well before the meeting.

From Agios Nikolaos: Ierapetra is roughly 35 km from Heraklion. Catch a public bus or a taxi from the airport to Ierapetra.

  • Bus: It costs about 3.3 euros and it takes almost 1 hour.
  • Taxi: It costs roughly 33 euros and it takes roughly 30 minutes (the price is subject to change)

Step 4: Reaching your hotel
Once you are at the bus station catch a taxi to your hotel. No directions are needed. The hotel name is enough for the driver. That should cost roughly between 6-10 euros. Call a taxi at (+30) 28420
26600 or 2842027350.
