Bonn can most conveniently be reached by train (see the
information
and schedules of the Deutsche
Bahn). Unfortunately, on 15 December 2002 the train timetable
Frankfurt-Bonn changed
with disadvantages for travels to Bonn.
Now the IC/EC trains which go directly to Bonn run only
every 2
hours!
The other trains are the fast ICE trains which run to
Cologne
(and further) on the other side of the Rhine (because the winding track
on "our" side is not suitable for these high-speed trains).
With the ICE trains you first go to Cologne and then
return to
Bonn with the next available train. These ICE trains also pass
Siegburg, but only every second stops there. So for those which
stop in Siegburg the alternative is to leave the train there and
then take the tram #66 (so-called Telekom Express) to Bonn Hbf
(arrives in the underground area below the Main Railway Station).
And then one continues to the MPI by bus as in the other
case.
For someone coming to the MPI for the very first time, it may be
easier to always go via Cologne (but also the most expensive
alternative (see below).
The worst change are the fares:
IC or EC train directly to Bonn costs 30 Euro
ICE to Cologne and return to Bonn by a regional or IC/EC/ICE train
costs 59.00 Euro
ICE to Siegburg costs 45.00 Euro + 3.80 Euro for the tram ticket
to Bonn (incl. the connecting bus trip to the MPI).
Arriving at Bonn Main Railway Station you can proceed
either by bus
or just take a taxi (the taxi rank is in front of the Railway
Station).
The Main Bus Station is opposite the Railway
Station. There are
6 platforms numbered A to F. To MPIfR you
take
the bus No. 623 (direction LESSENICH; € 2.10)
or 621
(direction DUISDORF Bf.; € 1.30) (both leaving from platform E). You
should
leave
the bus at the stop Immenburg. The MPIfR is located on the
opposite
side of the street in the direction of the bus route.
The tickets can be bought
either at one of the machines or in the bus. In the bus you should
immediately
cancel your ticket in one of the two yellow machines provided (also if
it was bought from the driver!). The various stops are normally, but
not
always, announced by the driver.
