4. Forschung am MPIfR / Research at the MPIfR
Forschungsgebiete
Research Areas
The Max Planck Institute for Radio Astronomy in Bonn is a world-leading research institute.  The institute performs with its 100-m radio telescope in Bad- Münstereifel-Effelsberg since decades one of the most successful large instruments in astronomy.  Another not less interesting project, the sub-millimetre telescope APEX in Chile is on operation since 2005.  The institute is also involved in a series of projects such as the low-frequency radio telescope LOFAR and the future project SKA.

Astronomische Forschungsobjekte
Astronomical research targets
Among the astronomical targets for the institute research we can highlight: the early universe, nuclei of radio galaxies, quasars and active galaxies by means of very-long- baseline interferometry, continuum and spectral line radiation from extragalactical systems and magnetic fields in extended galaxies, structure, phyiscal state and chemical evolution of the interstellar medium.  A special role is played by objects such as: the Galactic centre, star formation regions, supernova remnants, pulsars, and black holes.
