1. Twilit Dish (2008)

A silhouette of the Parkes 64-m radio telescope in New South Wales, Australia. This telescope, nicknamed ‘The Dish’ – popularised by the synonymous movie – is widely regarded as one of the prettiest in the world. This photo was taken at dusk, during the observation of pulsars.

2. Siviri Rocks! (2008)

Sunset over the Thermaic Gulf. This picture was taken from the bay of Siviri in Chalkidiki, Greece. I used a tobacco filter to enhance the sunset colours.

3. Abandoned Specs (2009)

My wife spotted this pair of glasses, hanging from a barbed wire, in our walk from Flash to the Three Shires Head, in Staffordshire, UK. It was an unusual find and one that, I think, deserved to be captured. Here, I converted it to mono, using a blue filter in PS.

4. Kata Tjuta (2008)

I took this photo during my recent visit to the Northern Territory, AUS. The mountain range is called Kata Tjuta (aka ‘The Olgas’) and is a conglomeration of basalt and granite rock covered by sandstone. We woke up early to catch the sunrise and were rewarded with a warm, orange light. I was lucky enough to have an additional cloud hovering above. I brought it out with the use of ND and tobacco graduated filters and a circular polariser. Coincidentally, the polariser created a dark depression in the sky around the cloud, giving it a comet-like look.

5. Cool Frog (2009)

This tree frog is part of the Habitat zoo, in Port Douglas, QLD. He was sitting still on a tree branch, in night club–style lighting. He looks cool, doesn't he?

6. At the End of the Rainbow (2009)

I had woken up early that Monday, in (psychological) preparation for my upcoming conference presentation. It was the first day on the island, so I was tempted to have a look outside the window. This is what I saw …

7. Red Crab (2008)

This is one of the crabs I saw in Garachico, Tenerife. Its vivid red, orange and yellow colours  make for a strong, colourful image.

8. Port Douglas (2009)

A view of the beach of Port Douglas, QLD, at low tide. The low tide allowed me to get close to the exposed foreground rocks, which I think lent a dramatic element to the scenery.

9. Dinner Is Served (2009)

This was taken moments before our din-din at Selwyn college, Cambridge.

10. Schloß Drachenburg (2014)

The vista of Schloß Drachenburg with Bonn and Cologne in the background, carved by the river Rhine. The photo was taken from the hills of the Drachenfells.
