Pulsars in globular clusters

The first table below list all globular clusters with known pulsars; the second lists all the pulsars in them (see ASCII version of the latter). I give relevant references on each pulsar whenever they are available, please cite these if possible.

At the bottom, I list the updates to this page.

I hope you find these tables useful! If you find any errors, or wish to alert me to relevant results missing below, please send me an email (pfreire at mpifr - bonn dot mpg dot de). Thanks!

PSR J1823−3022 is possibly associated with the GC NGC 6624; for this reason it is listed below.
Pulsar Ter 5 B (ljm+90) was later renamed PSR J1744−2444 and suspected of not being associated with Terzan 5 (lmbm00).
This is confirmed by the DM distribution of subsequent discoveries in Terzan 5 (rhs+05); for this reason this pulsar is not listed below.
Pulsars M3C and NGC 6749B (hrs+07) have never been confirmed, so they are not listed below, but they might still be.
47 Tuc A and B (ajm+89) have never been confirmed, their DMs are very different from those of subsequent discoveries in 47 Tuc.
Pulsar 47 Tuc K (mlj+90) was later found to be the third harmonic of 47 Tuc D (rlm+95). Pulsar NGC 6517J was later found to be a harmonic of NGC 6517B.

Notes in this table:
  • Pulsar names are as indicated in the latest literature. If there is no available position, the name will refer, by default, to the coordinates of the centre of the cluster. The new ATNF pulsar catalogue retains such names even if, after finding a timing solution, the pulsar's position is found to be different.
  • An asterisk indicates a parameter is still not well determined - this indicates that there is still no published timing/orbital solution.
  • i - Isolated pulsar.
  • (a) The period and period derivative refer to the epochs indicated in the references.
  • (b) Unit is 10−20, except where a power of 10 is indicated.
  • (c) Listed companion masses are calculated assuming a pulsar mass of 1.35 M and an inclination of 60°. For the cases indicated with a † symbol, there is additional information on the masses.
  • (g) Not published yet. Site of discovery indicated.

Fig. 2: Mass function plotted against orbital period for all known binary pulsar systems (data from the ATNF pulsar catalogue). The systems in globular clusters are indicated by the red circles; we highlight those in 47 Tuc with a ``+'' and those in Terzan 5 with a "x". Pulsar - neutron star systems are highlighted in purple. The inclined gray lines indicate a constant projected semi-major axis x = a sin i, the smallest on the lower left corner represents x = 1 light millisecond, each successive line represents an increase of x by a factor of 10. The dashed orange lines indicate, for a pulsar mass of 1.4 M and i = 90 degrees, the mass functions for the following companion masses (from top to bottom): 15 M (typical of O/B star companions), 1.4 M (typical of neutron star or heavy ONeMg WD companions), 0.2 M (typical of He WD and ``redback'' companions to millisecond pulsars), 0.03 M (typical of companions to ``black widow'' pulsars) and 0.0015 M (similar to that of the ``diamond planet'' system).
