EXCURSION TO EFFELSBERG & CONFERENCE DINNER

 

 

On Thursday 27th after the lunch break we will travel with two buses to the MPIfR 100m radio telescope in Effelsberg (near Bad Münstereifel), 45 km from Bonn.  After that, we will travel to the historic city of Bad Münstereifel, where the conference dinner will be held.  This is the program:

 

13:30 – Buses leave from the Gustav-Stresemann-Institut.

15:00 – Welcome at the Visitors Pavilion of the Effelsberg telescope. 

Talk by Dr. Eugen Preuß (MPIfR) on The Beginnings of VLBI in Effelsberg.

16:00 – Tour of the 100m antenna.  The visitors will be split into ca. 15-person groups

to visit the different places: Control Room, VLBI Room, Exterior of the antenna, Cables and Azimuth drive, Elevation drive, and Primary Focus.

Note: if raining, don’t bring fine clothes, since the water falling off the dish could be dirty.

17:30 – Coffee in the cafeteria of the Effelsberg control building (upstairs).

18:00 – Buses depart to Bad Münstereifel.

18:15 – Arrival at the medieval center of Bad Münstereifel.  Sightseeing on your own. You can visit:

City wall, built in the 13th and 14th centuries (4 gates: Werther, Johannis, Orchheimer & Heisterbacher; and 18 defensive towers).

Castle (13th century).

Church “Stiftskirche”, Romanesque building from the 13th century, with the graves of St. Chrysanthus and St. Daria.

The historic houses  Romanisches Haus (1167), Windeck (1644-1664), St. Michael School (1659-1727) and the City Hall (1476). 

You can also visit the glass artist shop at the Römische Glashütte (next to the Orchheimer Gate).

19:15 – Please walk uphill towards the conference restaurant Dachsbau.

19:30 – Reception at the Dachsbau.

20:00 – Conference Dinner at the

                                                   

22:00 – Buses leave from the Restaurant back to Bonn (Gustav-Stresemann-Institut).
