The Submillimeter Telescope Observatory (SMTO) is operated as a joint facility for the University of Arizona's Steward Observatory and the Max-Planck-Institut für Radioastronomie (Bonn). The SMTO is located on Emerald Peak of Mt. Graham (Longitude: -109:53:28.48, Latitude: 32:42:05.8, Altitude: 3185.963 m), approximately 75 miles north-east of Tucson, Arizona. The SMTO office is located in the Steward Observatory Building on North Cherry Avenue on the campus of the University of Arizona in Tucson.

The telescope is scheduled for around-the-clock observing 10 months of the year, with the remaining time used for long term maintenance. The SMTO is used by astronomers from all State of Arizona and German institutions. In addition, a minimum of 10% of the Arizona observing time is made available to astronomers from other institutions on a competitive basis.
