Science
The shadows of supermassive black holes have successfully been imaged with the help of the EHT.
M87* and Sgr A* are single, supermassive black holes.
However, there is mounting evidence, that pairs of supermassive black holes should be out there in the centers of galaxies as well.
Galaxies collide and as a consequence of these collisions, supermassive binary black holes (SMBBHs) are formed.
Evidence for the Gravitational Wave background emitted by SMBBH mergers throughout cosmic history has
recently been presented by the EPTA and NANOGrav Collaboration. The earliest supermassive black hole detected by
JWST (at a redshift of almost 9) is part of an on-going merger of galaxies. Thus - there must be close pairs of these big black holes in the centers of galaxies and we try to find them. - Searching for SMBBHs - with the help of precessing jets (our most recent paper can be found here). AGN-jets are important particle-accelerators in space. Their radio-emission varies ...
Why does it vary? Precession due to a binary black hole might provide the answer. - Understanding Neutrino emssion from AGN

Vorlesung

COST Action MP0905 - Black Holes in a Violent Universe
Between 2010 and 2014, I chaired the COST Action as project leader, together with A. Alberdi (vice-chair),
U. Wyputta, and S. Tuhkanen.
Our goal was, to bring scientists working on all masses and all facets (observations, theory, simulation, etc.)
of black hole science together. We managed to inspire inter- and cross-disciplinary science.
Please find more information about our COST activities here
SFB 956 - Conditions and Impact of Star Formation -
Astrophysics, Instrumentation and Laboratory Research
Together with our team, we investigated the conditions for star formation in active galaxies and
the interplay between the active black hole nucleus and the galaxies at intermediate redshifts (z<0.1).
Please find out more about the science here. More about SFB956 can be found here.
Science & Art
Creativity is the driving force behind science and art.
I am interested in both, and try to help bridging the gap between them.
Within the SFB 956, we organized an Exhibition at the Science Center College Overbach (near Jülich). Another
exhibtion took place athe atelier of the rolling mill in Pulheim - called "Dialogue of Stars - Dialog der Sterne".
Our goal was to bring artists, scientists, and the public together to show and discuss science and art.
Painting
whenever there is some spare time, I enjoy experimenting with colours to show the beauty of our planet Earth.
