Jasper National Park
Icefields Parkway (again)
South of the Columbia icefields, we were in the Bow River valley. This
eventually joins the Saakatchewan River, the water ends in Hudson Bay
(Atlantic Ocean). North of the Columbia icefields, we enter the valley
of the Athabasca River, which much further north joins the Mackenzie
River, which flows to the Arctic Ocean.
The Valley of the Athabasca is very beautiful indeed!
Beautiful is the blue color of the river. Even more in bright, sunny days.
The mountains give a perfect frame to this gorgeous valley.
I see some ghostly white beings marching slowly towards us. I have
never seen an animal as white as this!
They are mountain goats, of course. But they look like spirits
wandering in the forest.
One of the many attractions is the numerous waterfalls along this
river. Here we have the lower Sunwapta Falls (a 20-min hike from the road).
The views of the mountains are also a perpetual source of surprise and
joy! Such majestic beauty everywhere!
The other famous falls in this part are the Athabasca falls.
