The Central Kiloparsec: Active Galactic Nuclei and Their Hosts ---------------------------------------------- The Fifth RadioNet Science Workshop 4 - 6 June 2008 Ierapetra, Crete http://www.mpifr-bonn.mpg.de/div/vlbi/ckp08 Dear Colleague, We are pleased to announce a workshop on "The Central Kiloparsec" which will be held on 4-6 June 2008 at Arion Palace Hotel in the town of Ierapetra, Crete. The workshop is sponsored by the RadioNet Consortium, within the FP6 program. Workshop description: --------------------- The interplay between active nuclei and their galactic hosts is amongst the most important areas of astrophysical research, connecting the nuclear activity, galactic evolution and physics of large scale structures in the Universe. This research theme relies upon synergy of knowledge and information obtained in several different fields of astrophysics including high-resolution radio, optical, and X-ray observations, optical, NIR, and X-ray spectroscopy, and large broad-band surveys of galaxies. The workshop is going to bring together leading scientists working in these fields and provide a forum for interaction, exchange of ideas, and forming new cross-field collaborations in the area of AGN and host galaxy research. Critical areas of AGN research will be highlighted in a small number of invited reviews, and further explored in the contributed talks and open end discussions. The workshop will be focused on four major themes: 1. Supermassive black holes and the nuclear environment in galaxies 2. Star and gas in the central regions of galaxies 3. Jets and outflows and their effect on the galactic environment 4. Cosmological co-evolution of AGN and their hosts Key speakers will be invited to give introductory reviews in each of these areas, followed by contributed talks and poster presentations. Program concept --------------- The workshop program will have about 10 invited and 30 contributed talks and a number of posters. A tentative list of scientific sessions includes: * A synthetis picture of AGN * Extreme vicinity of SMBH * Accretion disks and coronae in AGN * Disk-outflow connection and molecular tori * Stars and gas in the nuclear regions * Relativistic jets in the nuclear regions * Sub-relativstic outflows and extended regions * SMBH and their galactic hosts * Binary SMBH and nuclear regions * AGN feedback * Co-evolution of SMBH and AGN Contributions are invited for these topics. Venue ----- The workshop will be held at the Arion Palace Hotel hotel in Ierapetra, Crete (http://www.ellada.net/arion-palace/) Attendance and logistics ------------------------ The workshop attendance will be limited to about 50 participants. The conference fee is 60 Euros, payable in cash at the registration desk. Partial finacial support from the RadioNet funding will be available for invited speakers, young scientists and students. Request for financial support should be made in the registration form (in the field "Dietary and other requirements"). Publication ----------- Proceedigns of the workshop will be published in Memorie della Societa Astronomica Italiana and will also be made available electronically.
