April 06,2009 Medicina station report to EVN TOG meeting These items cover the period September 2008 - April 2009: 1) Mark5: - Two 960 Gb modules have been repopulated with new 500 Gb disks. - A further purchase of disks and racks has been finalized, the total amount of the disk pool for astronomy is now 168TB. 2) Field System: - It is now running the 9.9.0 version. - We plan to upgrade our control PC to the Field System Linux 7 as soon as possible. 3) Receivers: - The 22Ghz multifeed receiver mounted on the telescope since march 2008 has now been fully characterized along the whole available bandwidth (18-26 Ghz). Optics alignment was done and a pointing model is now available. The central horn, the one used for VLBI, shows a Tsys of about 75K at 45 degrees of elevation (tau=0.1). The antenna gain is about 0.1-0.11K/Jy. The 1.3cm part during the last two sessions were succesfully carried on with this new receiver (fringes produced). For single-dish porposes the multifeed (14 outputs 2GHz wide) was also equipped with a total power back-end able to detect the whole bandwidth with sampling rate down to 1 msec. However the single-dish instrumentation is still under test. - During this year we will also finalize a new receiver in the 5cm band (5.7 to 7.7 GHz), it is due for the commissioning of the Sardinia Radio Telescope but it will be tested on Medicina antenna. We'll try to be ready for the last 2009 session or, more realistically, for the following ones. 4) Antenna - The status of the elevation wheel is continuosly monitored, unfortunately the funds for the needed replacement are not avaiable. 5) e-vlbi: - Eventually we got from local provider the shortest path from Medicina to Bologna (40Km), at the moment still illuminated at 1Gb/s. Devices needed by the 10Gb/s have just been bought. Anyway the time scale is unknow because GARR must upgrade their equipment as well. A. Orfei A. Orlati G. Maccaferri
