Help Desk/Database

The TWG discussed the possibility of setting up a central repository with extended search and conferencing facilities. Technical support for the MkIV upgrade could be the first application. M.A. Garrett believed that several public domain programs ought to be avialable but a good database system might cost real money. A dedicated (workstation) machine would probably be required with a reasonable amount of disk space (at least 1 Gbyte). The total cost for the hardware would be around USD 10000. It was suggested that the machine ought to be sited at JIVE. K. Ruf felt there was no need to move from the VAX in Bologna. M.A. Garrett noted that it would be difficult to obtain public domain software for VMS machines and manpower would be required to set up and maintain the system. See report by H.S. Sanghera - Appendix 5.
