Data Formats

P. Burgess summarised the main points of the document previously written by Richard Schilizzi. At the moment there was no definitive description of the log format that would be required by the VLBA. Apparently the current MkIII logs might be useable with some added information. P. Burgess noted that software would have to be developed. The most likely contributors to this would be Dave Graham and Paul Burgess. Anyone else who was interested in this project would also be welcome.

P. Burgess noted that Richard Schilizzi (JIVE) had suggested that continous noise adding would be required for TSYS measurements. A. Orfei and C. Trigilio felt that in principle Medicina and Noto could switch over to this system. Jodrell and Westerbork already used this system. M.A. Garrett beleived that it was also important to measure TSYS across the entire MkIII band (i.e. in each VC). This was not done at Jodrell or Westerbork. This had implications for post-processing especially at the fringe-fitting stage where each channel ought to be weighted independently - especially in the presence of RFI. There was some discussion on what format the calibration data should be presented to the PI. In the absence of any VLBA logging standard, M.A. Garrett believed that the EVN should adopt the AIPS ANCAL format immediately (see also appendix 2). It was agreed that this was a reasonable standard to adopt.

ACTION ITEM: VLBI friends to adopt the ANCAL standard for calibration logs.

ACTION ITEM: Technical friends to consider how frequent TSYS measurements could be made accross the entire MkIII band (i.e. TSYS measurements in each VC).
