43GHz as a network frequency

Porcas asked what had been decided at the Grenoble workshop. The consensus was that nothing had been decided. Alef noted that 43GHz was difficult for Effelsberg, although this ought to improve in the future. Schilizzi felt that since the VLBA had made this a standard frequency the EVN would have to consider its position. Alef asked when receivers would be available at Noto and Cambridge. Spencer reported that there was much interest in this frequency at Jodrell but that the receiver was still waiting to be funded. Porcas discussed the various merits of 2cm which he suspected would become one of the VLBA's main observing frequencies. He suggested that 2cm might also be adopted as a network frequency. Alef felt that 2cm was more important than the spectral line bands at 6.8/12GHz. Graham reported that Metsahovi is buying a 43GHz receiver from NRAO. MPIfR is working on 43GHz amplifiers so that it may be possible to purchase these in the future. Orfei reported that Medicina would have a 43GHz receiver in a year or so. Given the funding situation Spencer expected that it would not be available at Jodrell until 1994 at the earliest. Graham noted that Yebes and Onsala already had 43GHz. Schilizzi concluded that in a couple of years it was likely that approx 8 EVN stations would be equipped with 43GHz.
