JIVE

Schilizzi reported that with multinational and EC support 14.5M Guilders was available to upgrade the EVN. The main goals of the projects were:

The scientific and technical goals were as follows:

The correlator was expected to be up and running by 1997. There was approximately 400K dollars available to upgrade existing DATs. The estimated cost of upgrading MkIII to MkIV was 90k dollars so there was enough money for 5 upgrades. However, changes would be required to the BBCs and this was not included in the 90k price. Graham explained that to upgrade the existing BBC's with 16 MHz filters would require changes to be made in the phase shift network. In addition we would have to throw out 2 of the existing filters to accomodate the 8 and 16 MHz ones. Burgess felt that another engineering person was required to work on such problems until the correlator design stage was complete. Schilizzi was unsure if this could be supported through JIVE.
