Correlator Issues

Alef urged stations to follow the recommendations on the file names being used for station logs on ASTBO1. It was decided that those stations which produced separate TSYS measurements should place these at the end of the standard log file. The naming convention was defined with the following example: EM4LOG.B (expt No. EM4, station Effelsberg). Alef hoped the JIVE support person for the correlator would improve the present knowledge of data quality, clock stability etc.. There was much work to be done in this area but required more man power effort.

Discussion turned to the fate of the MkII system. It was generally felt that most users would migrate to the MkIII/VLBA system once the NRAO correlator got going. Porcas thought that users might want to make use of Russian telescopes, which only have the MkII system. Schilizzi was anxious not to shut them out. Mantovani did not believe that it would be worthwhile upgrading the MkII correlator in Bologna.

Burgess reported that Penny and Giles were selling BBC kits for 3500 dollars each. Several would be required for the SEST project. The finished article was expected to cost 13.5k dollars.
