EVN receivers and Frequency flexibility

Schilizzi asked about the frequency flexibility at each station. Effelsberg had 3 receivers which were available within a few minutes. Medicina could switch between S/X and K band on a similar time scale. A similar system was expected at Noto soon. WSRT would be able to switch to any of the standard frequencies within 30 seconds around 1996. Cambridge had been designed to VLBA specs and could switch between 1.3, 6 and 18 in a few minutes. For the Lovell telescope around a day was required to change the receiver. The MERLIN E-system telescopes could change between 6 and 18 within a few minutes. The Mk2 telescope required a few hours to change the receiver. The complete MERLIN array could change frequency within a day though this was not considered to be a normal operation at least for the moment. Graham suspected that Torun was probably frequency flexible. Schilizzi suggested that the WSRT design might be suitable for the Lovell and Mk2 telescopes since the receivers were mounted at the prime focus. Schilizzi also felt that we ought to inform the directors that frequency flexibility would be required soon for the EVN.

ACTION ITEM: R.T. Schilizzi - present frequency table to the directors for discussion.
