Dewar design

Dewar 18-21cm receiver

The dewar (see picture) was built within the scope of a diploma thesis. It is designed for a receiver system in the 18 - 21cm wavelenght range with a waveguide diameter of 153mm. The dewar is supposed to be mounted next to two other receivers into a receiver box which will be positioned in the primary focus of the Effelsberg 100m-telescope. This will allow for shorter conversion times compared to the amount of time currently needed for a receiver change. In order for the dewar to fit into a receiver box with two other receivers, it had to be designed weight and space saving.
These goals were achieved by both the seperation into receiver and waveguide case and the use of lightweight and sturdy materials (AlMg 4,5 Mn). The overall weight is just 37kg with a useable volume of 110 litres (empty). It is less space consuming than its predecessor models.
